Contemporary Calligraphy for Teens Grades 6+
This workshop highlights the art and practice of fine lettering, for artists or those interested in the art of the hand-written note. Teens will experiment with traditional “dip” pens, as Claire introduces various calligraphy styles. Participants will practice basic pen and ink techniques, creating their own greeting card or personal stationary. As well, Claire will review some great books, and authors who have written books on the “art of handwriting”.
Time: 10:00am – 11:00am
Location: Temple Building, 126 Hurontario Street
Ages: Teens and Tweens, Grades 6+
Instructor: Claire Reyes has loved handwriting and paper since she was very young and in 2006, decided to start her own fine lettering business. Claire’s handwriting style has a modern, loose aesthetic, and she loves to experiment with different coloured inks and papers. Her clients include event planners and bridal couples, and she handles custom typography requests. Claire received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History and English at the University of Toronto; she has always been inspired by design and typography.
Art+Word=X Grades 6+
Participants will learn how to express the written word artistically, though mixed media techniques. By the end of the workshop, teens will have created their own funky mashup of text and textile.
Time: 11:30 am – 12:30pm
Location: FreeSchools World Literacy Community Room (Library)
Ages: Teens and Tweens, Grades 6+
Instructor: Lynda Smith has studied graphic design, computer graphics, intuitive painting and therapeutic art. Her work combines dreamy impressionistic elements with graphic lines and shapes that result in inspiring and metaphysical artwork. Lynda believes that art comes from a place deep within, which gives freedom to the creative muse, and lets the art guide the artist.freedom to the creative muse, and lets the art guide the artist.
Author Reading & Signing
Date and Time: Saturday, September 10th at 1:00 pm
Location: FreeSchools World Literacy Community Room @ the Collingwood Public Library
Description: For this reading, Kelley will be reading from two of her books published in 2011. The first will be The Gathering, a Young Adult modern fantasy spiced with mystery and romance. For the other, she will be reading from Spellbound, an Otherworld novel filled with suspense, plot reversals and betrayals.
Workshop Leader: Kelley Armstrong
Kelley Armstrong is the bestselling author of the Otherworld series and the New York Times bestselling Darkest Powers trilogy, which includes The Summoning, The Awakening, and The Reckoning.
Kelley has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers’ dismay. All efforts to make her produce “normal” stories failed.
Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing-dungeon. She lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids and far too many pets. You can visit her online at www.darkestpowers.com.
